How to Select Dewatering Hose Size
The pump connection is only the starting point. A useful dewatering-hose specification also describes the required flow, total run, elevation change, water quality and operating pressure.
Separate suction and discharge
A suction line must resist the vacuum produced at the pump inlet. A collapsible lay-flat discharge hose is not a substitute for a suitable suction hose. Identify which side of the pump the hose serves before comparing products.
For discharge, give the internal diameter, required length and working pressure. Confirm the pump’s maximum and surge conditions rather than selecting a hose only from its colour or apparent wall thickness.
| Enquiry field | Example of the information needed |
|---|---|
| Duty | Suction or discharge |
| Diameter | Internal diameter and pump connection |
| Length | Per roll and total installed run |
| Operating conditions | Working pressure, surge and temperature |
| Route | Distance, elevation, bends and abrasion |
| Connections | Coupling profile, material and fitting method |
Describe the full pumping route
Longer runs, elevation changes, fittings and bends affect the duty. A qualified pump or system supplier can use the required flow and pump curve to check the arrangement. TSC can then quote a hose against the resulting specification.
- Pump inlet and outlet connection sizes.
- Required flow and available pump information.
- Horizontal run, elevation difference and bends.
- Water, sediment, temperature and abrasion exposure.
- Coupling type, clamp arrangement and pressure requirement.
Compare quotes on the same basis
State the jacket and lining requirement for a canvas hose, or the specified construction for a lay-flat hose. Include roll length, coupling material and whether fittings must arrive attached. Enquiries commonly cover 2, 4 and 6 inch sizes; other requirements should be specified explicitly.
Confirm the chosen hose’s manufacturer data and current stock before placing an order. Pressure ratings, testing documents and service conditions must match the selected product, not a similar-looking photograph.
Use the selected pump and hose manufacturer’s current data. No flow capacity or pressure rating is inferred from nominal hose size in this guide.
