Fixed vs Swivel Scaffolding Couplers
Choose the coupler for the connection shown in the scaffold design. Fixed and swivel couplers perform different connection functions, and the word ‘heavy’ does not provide a verified load rating.
Identify the connection first
A fixed or right-angle coupler is intended for the specified fixed-angle tube connection. A swivel coupler allows an angled connection, commonly used in a designed bracing arrangement. The correct selection depends on the scaffold system and approved connection detail.
Forged and sheet-metal couplers are also different construction types. Compare like-for-like quotations instead of treating every coupler with a similar appearance as the same item.
| Purchase point | Fixed coupler | Swivel coupler |
|---|---|---|
| Connection function | Specified fixed-angle joint | Specified angled joint |
| Order description | State fixed/right-angle type | State swivel type |
| Compatibility check | Both tube outside diameters | Both tube outside diameters |
| Rating | Confirm for the selected model | Confirm for the selected model |
Nominal labels need a dimension check
TSC’s catalogue uses nominal size descriptions such as 40 × 40 mm and 40 × 50 mm. Give the actual outside diameters of both tubes when enquiring. The supplier must confirm that the selected coupler clamps those tubes correctly.
- Connection: fixed or swivel.
- Construction: forged or the specified alternative.
- Actual tube outside diameters and required finish.
- Manufacturer’s rating, tightening information and any required test certificate.
Prepare a comparable dealer order
List each type and size as a separate line with its quantity. If the order is for replacement parts, include photographs of the current coupler, fasteners and tube marking. Confirm whether bolts, nuts and washers are included.
Installation torque, permitted loads and the inspection method must follow the manufacturer and competent scaffold designer. Do not calculate capacity from the catalogue’s listed unit weight.
