ABC vs CO2 Fire Extinguishers
Select an extinguisher against the actual fire risk and the rating on the chosen product. Agent capacity, such as 4 kg, identifies the amount of agent; it does not by itself state the extinguisher’s fire rating or suitability for a location.
Understand the extinguishing agent
ABC powder and carbon dioxide use different extinguishing agents. ABC powder leaves a powder residue that matters when planning protection near sensitive equipment. CO2 discharges without that powder residue, but its suitability still depends on the fire risk, enclosure and product rating.
Use the fire classifications and electrical-use instructions printed on the India-market product label. Do not assume that a rating or class label copied from an overseas product has the same meaning.
| Purchase consideration | ABC powder | CO2 |
|---|---|---|
| Agent | ABC dry chemical powder | Carbon dioxide |
| Residue consideration | Powder cleanup may be required | No powder residue |
| Capacity selection | Match approved requirement | Match approved requirement |
| Key limitation to review | Risk-specific suitability and residue | Oxygen displacement and limited cooling |
| Final decision | Product label and competent fire-risk assessment | Product label and competent fire-risk assessment |
Check location-specific limitations
CO2 displaces oxygen and presents a hazard in confined or poorly ventilated spaces. It also provides limited cooling, so the possibility of re-ignition must be considered. A qualified fire-safety professional should confirm the agent, location and equipment arrangement.
No single extinguisher should be assumed suitable for all materials, cooking-oil risks, metal fires or electrical conditions. Follow the site fire-risk assessment and manufacturer’s instructions; do not select equipment only by colour or price.
Specify the complete supply
TSC’s fire-safety catalogue lists ABC capacities of 1, 2, 4, 6 and 9 kg and CO2 capacities of 2, 4.5, 6.5, 9 and 22.5 kg. Identify the required portable or trolley arrangement, make, rating, approval and mounting accessories.
For a replacement order, send a clear photograph of the existing label and the approved requirement. Confirm the manufacturing date, service documentation, hose, horn and bracket contents in the quotation.
